Department of Telecommunication(DOT) of India announced a long awaited decision in public interest about introduction of mobile number portability in four metros (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata). So now subscribers will be able to switch their telecom operator, with out changing their phone numbers. Around 37 million mobile subscriber are expected to get benefit of this.
Changing a mobile number sometimes becomes nightmare, As you have inform everyone again about your new number, sending emails to all, changing number in business cards, updating details in various tele-banking services, adding voicemail to previous number and still some people will left without informed.But Now it will become easy with with Full number portability, If you are unhappy or being harassed by your mobile operator, you can change the operator and still retain your most loved, lucky and wide spread mobile number. Even If you are moving to any other city like from Delhi to Mumbai, then No need to change your mobile number. You can continue with the same mobile number in Mumbai also. DoT has decided to introduces this facility in phases. In First phase this will be implemented in only metro cities, with future expansion to all over India. Some of the GSM operators are not too happy because the Government has asked them to bear the cost of upgrading their network to enable number portability. That apart operators will now be concerned about higher churn rate as new players come into the market.while Reliance Communications chief Anil Ambani said, “This is a forward-looking initiative. It is pro-competition, pro-consumer and above all, pro-choice. For the first time, in the four metros GSM operators will face real competition”. Though the facility will be available by end of 2008, but still a great breakthrough. Surely this move will improve the service quality and market Competition.
